Supplies Needed: Capital Region Church Sending Humanitarian Aid to Ukraine

St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Watervliet is collecting items through Friday, March 11, 2022.

The past week and a half, I’ve opened up my Google Docs half a dozen times a day, only to stare blankly at the screen, eventually writing paragraphs that I couldn’t seem to string together into a cohesive thought.

It’s been ten days since Russian President Vladimir Putin began his invasion of Ukraine.

Ten days of families fleeing their homes and ordinary citizens becoming soldiers. Ten days of cities attacked, civilians wounded, men, women and children losing their lives. Ten days of destruction and devastation, precipitated by one man’s thirst for power.

But amidst the chaos, pain and turmoil, there are undeniable threads of something different: unity, courage, hope.

The Ukrainian people are banding together and defending their country in an effort that’s nothing short of inspiring. And citizens of countries across the world are publicly sharing their support of the sovereign nation, including Russians, in a display of solidarity.

Although seeing live reports of the unfolding events are jarring, living in the age of technology has exposed Putin’s lies, and highlighted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s bravery.

I’m not a foreign policy expert, I don’t pretend to know what the United States or NATO should or shouldn’t be doing, but war wakes people up. Knowing people are sleeping in subway stations, families have split apart, and people are dying really puts our lives into perspective.

Personally, none of my so-called problems compare to living in a warzone.

There’s not much we have control over as this war wages on, but there are ways we can help.

My friend Jenny recently shared a Facebook post letting people know a Ukrainian student from Queensbury High School is collecting supplies to send to Ukraine.

St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Watervliet is organizing the donation drive and has asked for the items listed in the picture below.

Donations will be collected through Friday, March 11, 2022, but the drive may be extended. If you are interested in donating, please email phoebewells@marchfirstmedia.com

Only God knows what the future holds, and although this time is filled with uncertainty, I believe in the Ukrainian people. I believe in their sovereignty, their strength, courage, and resolve.

And I believe history will prove their fight triumphant.
